Dear Parkinson
In confirmation of our telephonic conversation to-day, with reference to your secretary's note of the 10th January to my personal assistant, this is to let you know that Norton has, up to now, not actually been gazetted as Lieutenant-General. This will be rectified immediately and he will be gazetted as acting Lieutenant- General as from the 6th August, 1940, on which date, I understand, he assumed the administration of the Government.
As regards Norton's question as to his
automatic reversion to Major-General on vacating the Governorship, you would be right to inform him that this will be so. I shall be cabling War Office
instructions to Norton shortly with reference to his future movements and will, of course, include in the message instructions to the effect that he will revert to the rank of Major-General on vacation.
